If the high blood pressure in pregnant women appeared, and sudden swelling, not just the feet but also other parts of the body, and there is a positive finding of protein in the urine, it is a disorder called preeclampsia. Symptoms of preeclampsia include the presence of protein in the urine, swelling of fingers and joints, headaches, spots before the eyes and other visual disturbances and pain under the rib cage on the right side. Typically, preeclampsia occurs in the first pregnancy, and after 20 weeks, and may adversely affect the mother and the unborn child. Severe pre-eclampsia, which can be developed in the last weeks of pregnancy can be seen for headaches, blurred vision, intolerance of bright light, nausea and vomiting, and swelling of the ankles. If preeclampsia is left untreated can lead to eclampsia, which causes loss of consciousness, coma, and can even lead to death of the mother and child. If symptoms begin to appear eclampsia, it is obliged to go to a hospital, where pregnant women receive medication for lowering blood pressure, removing excess fluid from the body and to prevent an attack of cramps. The only sure way to detect this disorder in pregnancy have regular check-ups in order to detect increased blood pressure and protein levels in urine. The risk of preeclampsia may be reduced so as to pre-pregnancy control blood pressure, and change some habits, such as reduced salt intake, regular physical activity and weight control. The risk group includes women who chronically suffer from high blood pressure, those in a previous pregnancy had preeclampsia, and women who are overweight before pregnancy. In high-risk group, and women who are expecting twins, and women who have already pre-pregnancy suffered from kidney disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. It is considered ill five to eight percent of future mothers of this form of gestosis, whose real causes are not known, but it is always associated with pregnant women. Studies have shown that diet has no significant influence on the occurrence of gestosis.
